Versailles, the sun of Yvelines
Marly-le-Roi, a royal town
Marly-le-Roi can be explored with friends or family, starting on the Grande Rue with its pretty, colourful boutiques. Then we enter the Domaine de Marly and it’s love at first sight! The park will seduce you with its ponds, its green lawns, its sculptures, and its beautiful paths designed by Jules-Hardouin Mansart.
Marly, second home of kings
It was Louis XIV who chose the forest of Marly as a secondary residence near Versailles, where he organised “Les Marlys” festive events. The king wanted a residence where he could retreat in complete privacy, and Marly had woods, and Louis XIV was a great hunter… Marly was a residence for private entertainment, with balls, parties, card games and billiards, as well as concerts. Today, the museum of the Domaine royal de Marly retraces this history and that of the famous Machine de Marly.
Source of inspiration for Impressionist painters
In the 19th century, artists such as Sisley, Alexandre Dumas fils and Maillol came here to find calm and inspiration near the banks of the Seine.
Let yourself be tempted by a tour of old Marly proposed by the Pays des Impressionnistes Tourist Office!
Marly, Provence in the west of Paris
Also worth seeing: the old village and its narrow streets, which give it the feel of a Provencal village, and just next door in Port-Marly, Alexandre Dumas’ house le château de Monte Cristo and the Impressionist Trail on the banks of the Seine.
We’re particularly fond of the many restaurants on Grande rue, including the Michelin-starred Le Village and its Japanese chef Tomohiro Uido, the Cottage for its famous brunch, the auberge du Vieux Marly or the Bab for gourmet burgers.
