The 14th-century fortified castle was gradually transformed by its owners into a pleasure residence acquired by Louis the 16th, in 1783. From its origins as a fortress, the castle has preserved its bastioned walls and its 14th-century dungeon.
Imagine that it was at the Château de Rambouillet itself that François 1st died, that Charles the 10th abdicated, that the "Précieuses" had their literary court in the 17th century, that Louis the 16th and Napoleon lived until the French Republic convert it as a presidential residence... Enjoy the park and the French garden and stroll from canals to water features!
Walking through the park, you will discover a shell cottage built by the Duke of Penthièvre for the Princess of Lamballe between 1779 and 1780. This chaumière is composed of mother-of-pearl decorations and shells from all over Europe. Nearby, you can find the Queen’s dairy, built for Marie-Antoinette as a gift from her husband the king. At the time, it was a tasting place.
A unique visit not to be missed! The store remains open every day except Tuesday.
