The church of Saint Eustache in Viroflay, dating from 1543, is the oldest in the town. Consecrated by Cardinal Eustache du Bellay, it could be seen from a distance coming from Paris. Once surrounded by thatched houses and a cemetery, it was replaced in the 1960s by Notre Dame du Chêne, a larger church just a few hundred metres away. The church of Saint-Eustache benefited from ornaments donated by Louis XIV and his successors, which were restored after the Revolution, when it was declared a "Temple of Reason".
