In 1607, Claudio Monteverdi premiered his Orfeo, a fable set to music, in Mantua for the Carnival opening at the Court Theatre of Duke Vincenzo I of Gonzaga.
For the first time in the history of music, real characters were animated by deeply moving human feelings: with this exceptional dramatic power, modern opera was born.
