In 1607, Claudio Monteverdi premiered his Orfeo, a fable set to music, in Mantua for the Carnival opening at the Court Theatre of Duke Vincenzo I of Gonzaga.

For the first time in the history of music, real characters were animated by deeply moving human feelings: with this exceptional dramatic power, modern opera was born. Stéphane Fuget is one of the great experts in this repertoire, specialising in historical ornamentation on the most illustrious stages. The Ensemble Les Épopées that he directs brings together some first-rate vocal and instrumental virtuosos, all acclaimed specialists of the Italian Seicento.

The CD recording they made of Ulysses' Return to his Homeland, by the same Monteverdi, is proving to be the great modern reference for this mythical score: this time it is L'Orfeo that will be performed in concert, for the release of its recording, with the splendid and sensitive Julian Prégardien singing all the magnificence of the first true hero in the history of opera.
