On June 3 1875, Georges Bizet died at the age of 36 in this house. A Knight of the Legion of Honour and former recipient of the Prix de Rome bursary, this opera composer stayed in Bougival from 1874 to 1875. He composed the most famous opera in the world,“Carmen”, while living in this house.

This house, which was rented by Georges Bizet, was built in the 19th century on the banks of the Seine.

The French composer Georges Bizet composed this most famous opera in this house.
George Bizet enjoyed Bougival, he was delighted by this loop of the Seine.
He said : " I found a quiet little place, very pleasant, by the water. I am going to compose Carmen here" .
The opera was commissioned by the Opera-Comique that wanted a cheerful and easy piece with a happy ending.
If this opera is today the most played opera in the world, Georges Bizet never saw its success. Unfortunately Carmen was a failure because the audience was shocked by the subject. He passed away three months after the premiere of Carmen.
At the time of the "Belle Epoque", a horse-drawn tram line, nicknamed the “American railroad”, connected Rueil Malmaison to Port Marly.
Around this house, you will notice some beautiful town houses, which were also prestigious during the last century, and the landscapes that inspired the Impressionists.
